    About NABERS for Schools

NABERS for Schools helps schools measure their campus's energy and water performance. It gives schools a rating from 1 to 6 stars, based on the energy and water efficiency. This rating can then be used to identify areas for future cost savings and building improvements, as well as to promote the school's environmental credentials.

Beyond the Rating: NABERS as a catalyst for a sustainable school culture

A NABERS rating isn't just a one-time assessment; it's a springboard for ongoing improvement and a deeper commitment to sustainability. Schools actively engaged in programs like the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) will find that NABERS perfectly complements their existing efforts.

    • Community recognition: A high NABERS rating is a powerful communication tool, demonstrating your school's dedication to sustainability and attracting like-minded families and partners.
    • Benchmarking success: Your NABERS star rating serves as a tangible measure of progress, celebrating achievements and motivating further action within your organisation.
    • Enhanced learning: By incorporating NABERS data into your curriculum, you can inspire students to become active participants in sustainability efforts, fostering a generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
    • Lower costs: By improving your NABERS rating, you can optimise your energy and water consumption. Improved energy efficiency translates directly into lower operating costs, freeing up resources for other important school initiatives.
    • Data-driven action: NABERS provides factual data on your school's energy and water performance, allowing you to implement sustainability initiatives where they'll have the most impact.

    How does it work?

We analyse 12 months of your school's energy and water bills to assess how efficiently it's running. To make sure it's a fair comparison, we consider your school's size, location, climate, and other relevant factors when comparing it to similar schools. This ensures your rating accurately reflects your performance and identifies areas with the most potential for improvement.

    Two Ratings to Choose From:

    • NABERS Energy: Get a detailed look at your electricity and gas consumption, and see where you can make the most impactful improvements. This might include upgrades to lighting, heating/cooling systems, or appliances.
    • NABERS Water: Uncover opportunities to reduce water waste in areas like irrigation, plumbing fixtures, and swimming pools, ensuring your school is using this precious resource responsibly.

    Getting started with NABERS

    1. Gather your data: Collect 12 months of energy bills and basic information about your school buildings.
    2. Engage an assessor: Find an accredited NABERS Assessor who can guide you through the process and provide expert advice.
    3. Get assessed: Your assessor will visit your school to verify your information which they then submit to us for a rating.

Improve your rating and drive progress

Your NABERS rating is valid for one year. This gives you time to implement energy- and water-saving strategies, then get re-assessed to see the impact of your efforts. With ongoing commitment, you can achieve a higher rating and enjoy the long-term benefits of a more sustainable school.

Government schools: take advantage of portfolio ratings

If you're part of a government school system, consider a portfolio rating. This allows you to assess multiple schools at once, saving time and money while gaining valuable insights across your entire portfolio.
