Exploring Electrification and Energy Efficiency Research

The ACT Government, in collaboration with NABERS, is developing a research project to better understand opportunities and barriers presented by gas-connected apartment buildings in an all-electric future. The research will look at medium to high-rise apartments in the context of improving energy efficiency and promoting electrification.

The research will be carried out by providing NABERS Energy & Water ratings to eligible buildings in the ACT, offering a range of valuable assessments and recommendations to drive energy efficiency and electrification.

Research Study Deliverables

Participating buildings will benefit from the following:

• NABERS Energy & Water Rating for Apartment Buildings: A comprehensive assessment to benchmark the building's energy and water performance.
• Energy Efficiency Recommendations Report: Detailed insights and recommendations to enhance the building's energy efficiency.
• Electrification Survey: An in-depth survey to explore the building's potential for electrification and transition away from gas reliance.

This innovative research study aims to transform medium to high-rise apartment buildings by enhancing energy efficiency and promoting electrification. By encouraging buildings to obtain their first NABERS rating, conducting electrification surveys, and providing comprehensive recommendation reports, this study empowers apartment building owners with the knowledge and resources to make impactful changes.

Collaborating for Success 

NABERS will collaborate closely with the ACT Government to ensure the project's success. As part of this partnership, NABERS will administer 15 NABERS assessments for eligible apartment buildings. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for the ACT community.
 

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the study, apartment buildings must meet the following criteria:

• Contain over 20 apartments and have at least 2 storeys.
• Have a gas connection.
• Not be serviced apartments or build-to-rent style apartments.
• Have no previous NABERS rating.
   

How to Apply 

Strata companies interested in participating in the study can submit their response before 31st August.

To apply for the study apartment buildings must send an email to NABERS via email at nabers@environment.nsw.gov.au. With the following information:

• Site contact person name, email and phone number
• Site address
• Confirm number of apartments at the site
• Confirm the site has a gas connection
• Confirm the site is not a serviced apartment or build to rent style apartment
• Confirm they have no previous NABERS rating
• Attach the relevant Strata plan/s
• Attach a copy of a recent bill for energy use on site

This information will be reviewed to confirm eligibility, and NABERS will provide the final approval for participation.
