NABERS are now accepting expressions of interest for the NABERS Embodied Carbon Independent Design Review (IDR) Panel.
This follows the April 2025 launch of the NABERS Embodied Carbon rating tool, which allows buildings to measure, verify and compare their upfront embodied carbon with similar buildings.
NABERS Commitment Agreements allow new buildings or existing buildings undergoing a partial rebuild to participate in the NABERS program during the design phase. Under the product, buildings commit to achieving a specific NABERS Embodied Carbon rating following construction. As part of the Embodied Carbon Commitment Agreement process, the engagement of an Embodied Carbon IDR Panel member is a mandatory requirement.
When conducting an Independent Design Review, IDR Panel members must:
1. Inform the designers and developers of a building as to its likely upfront embodied carbon and risks associated with their proposed building design and model.
In addition, Independent Design Reviewers may be required to:
2. Demonstrate to NABERS that a building is an appropriate candidate for a Commitment Agreement.
3. Demonstrate to a third party (such as a client or regulatory authority) that the proposed building can realistically be expected to achieve a given rating.
Who is eligible to apply?
Panel members are accredited professionals with expertise in measuring embodied carbon in building projects and are expected to provide independent assessments of buildings' embodied carbon.
To join the Embodied Carbon Independent Design Review panel, applicants must submit evidence that they meet the mandatory requirements and evaluation criteria. Applications are open to those who have held (or currently hold) a NABERS Embodied Carbon Assessor Accreditation or those who can demonstrate extensive experience in measuring embodied carbon in building projects.
