Small shopping centres across Australia receive free NABERS Energy ratings

In March 2021, NABERS launched a new offer for first time small shopping centre rating customers across Australia to get a free Energy rating.

The offer includes waiving both the NABERS Energy rating certification fee ($1,250 including GST) and a significant financial contribution towards the associated Assessor fees for small shopping centres (GLAR must be greater than 5,000m2 and less than or equal to 15,000m2), up to $3,000ex GST. 

This is the first time we’ve been able to offer financial support to small shopping centre customers with federal funding which is very exciting for us. The price of a NABERS rating can sometimes present a barrier for building owners. The intention of this offer is to provide retail businesses with a zero-cost opportunity to measure their environmental performance. As well as providing a benchmark for improvement, the first NABERS rating can also offer an avenue to other incentives and opportunities.

The broader aim of the initiative is to speed up Australia’s transition to net zero emissions buildings, with a specific focus on energy efficiency. The offer is targeting Energy Starters – buildings that are just getting started with sustainability and have not rated with NABERS Energy before. 

So far, the initiative has seen considerable uptake and NABERS has committed funding to 29 small shopping centres across five Australian states, with a breakdown as follows:

New South Wales = 13
Queensland = 6
South Australia = 5
Victoria = 4
Western Australia = 1

In order to guarantee fair coverage nationwide there is a cap of 20 sites per state.

The initial pilot offer will run until 30 June 2021 and eligible ratings must be lodged by 31 August 2021. If the offer is successful, more rounds may be considered in future.
