NABERS Accelerate expands into new sectors

News | 15 Jul 2020

NABERS is committed to reducing carbon emissions in the built environment, minimising water usage and minimising landfill waste to create a sustainable world, where buildings positively contribute to our world.

To date NABERS has enjoyed great success as a world-recognised and robust rating tool for offices, shopping centres, hotels and other building sectors. Since 2010 our ratings have helped save 7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and 1.2 billion litres of water.

As part of our commitment towards meeting the Australian government's 2050 net zero emissions targets, we're working hard to bring NABERS to more building sectors.

NABERS Accelerate

NABERS Accelerate is a program provided to new sectors to speed up the development and adoption of NABERS ratings in new sectors. NABERS Accelerate has the following workstreams:

Provide data on site characteristics and annual energy and water use for technical benchmarking through online and offline streams.

Become a member of our NABERS Accelerate panel. We will work with key stakeholders in new sectors through regular panel meetings during the course of the rating development.

Sign up for our newsletter and we will provide regular updates at key milestones of NABERS Accelerate.

Expanding to new sectors

We are delighted to announce the launch of NABERS Accelerate in three new building sectors. Following extensive industry consultation, we have prioritised the following sectors:

Accelerate - sector expansion

NABERS covers around 30% of the non-residential GHG emissions. The addition of these sectors will increase the NABERS coverage by another 20%. It would increase the NABERS rateable space by around 140 million sq m.

We are aiming to launch a NABERS rating product for residential aged care and retirement living in June 2021, followed by the other two sectors.

What about other sectors?

NABERS aims to launch NABERS Accelerate and eventually expand to service all major building types, as part of our strategic plan. To do this we will continue to engage new sectors in the built environment, such as retail tenants and supermarkets. We are aiming to announce the next set of expansion sectors in 2021.

Why should I participate in NABERS Accelerate?

  1. Shape the product: Ensure that the NABERS benchmarks are reflective of your buildings/portfolio
  2. Understand NABERS: An opportunity to better understand how NABERS benchmarking work and what will be required for a NABERS rating in future so you can be more prepared beforehand
  3. Pilot partnerships: An opportunity to lead the sector by potentially being one of the first industrial sites in Australia to get a NABERS rating
  4. Rating fee discounts: Discounts on rating lodgement fee through pilot partnerships, once rating product is launched
  5. Leadership: Be recognised by NABERS as an industry leader through NABERS Accelerate participation

How can I participate in NABERS Accelerate or find out more?

Industry stakeholder collaboration is key to building a sustainable future. We therefore invite you to work with us to build a rating product that adds value to your organisation.

We want to hear from stakeholders who work in the three new sectors above or have extensive experience in them. If you are interested in participating in one or more of the NABERS Accelerate workstreams, or would like to find out more, please email us at nabers.expansion@environment.nsw.gov.au

Data collection for benchmarking

Public and private schools

Provide data on your school’s campus characteristics, as well as your annual energy and water use. The NABERS team will use this for technical benchmarking. Providing your data ensures that the tool will suit your school. Download the data collection spreadsheet here.
